Organizing your Sound Effects

For our final radio presentations, we need to organize your sound effects in a manner that allows you to press the "play" button and your sound effect will play at the time that you want it to play. There are multiple ways for this to happen.

Here is the most basic, entry level method to make sure your sound effects are prepped and ready for performance.

Step One: Once you have downloaded your sound effects into your google folder, organize them by dragging and dropping the files into the sequence that they will need to be played during the show.

Step Two: Once they are organized in the correct order, rename the sound effects with the title of "Cue 1", "Cue 2", etc. Make sure that the script has the same titles and that they match the order that is needed in the script.

Step Three: Open each sound effect file in a new tab on your computer. Make sure that they are in the same order from left to right by their number in the title. In each page, you will see an image that has a play button clearly in the center of the page.

Step Four: Make sure to check that each page has the right sound level preset before the show.

Step Five: Before the show begins, have the first page open and the cursor hovering over the play button ready to push play when the right time occurs.

Step Six: Once the sound effect has been played, close the window and click on the next tab to press play when the right time occurs.

FOR ADVANCED STUDENTS:  If you are interested in using a more advanced FREE system that provides more control over playing cues then please investigate the following programs: Qlab (for MAC users), Multiplay (for PC users)

The first thing to do is download these free programs onto your computer. Follow the instructions below:

QLAB - for MAC users

Step 1. Download Qlab at this link: https://download.cnet.com/QLab/3000-2170_4-142366.html Links to an external site.

Step 2: Watch the Qlab tutorial and follow along using your program: LINK HERE Links to an external site.

MULTIPLAY - for WINDOWS user

Step 1: Download MULTIPLAY at this link: http://www.da-share.com/software/multiplay/ Links to an external site.

Step 2: Read the MULTIPLAY manual: LINK HERE Download LINK HERE

THEN, EXPERIMENT. Take the software out for a spin and see what it can do. Drag and drop your sound effect files into the program and see how it may be helpful to organizing the sound effects for the final presentation.
