VOCABULARY

suffrage	the right to vote in political elections; women were granted suffrage in 1920 with the 19th amendment
patriarch	a system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it.
gender socialization	the process of learning the social expectations and attitudes associated with one's sex
privilege	a special entitlement granted to a restricted group, either by birth or on a conditional basis
feminism	advocating for women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men
misogyny	dislike of, or contempt for, ingrained prejudice against women
feminine	the quality of being female; womanliness; most often a stereotype denoting weakness, nurturance, illogic, and meekness.

ACTIVITIES & ASSIGNMENTS

1: Women in the 1950s lecture (notes):Students will learn about the contribution that women made to the war effort during World War II, as well as the return to conformity that they experienced in the post-war era.

2: Second Wave Feminism Presentations (assignment, rubric, example, chart): In groups, students will create Google Slides presentations looking at various events during the Second Wave Feminist movement. They will analyze the problem that the women were addressing, as well as the way they attempted to overcome these challenges. Students will use both video and primary source pieces, annotating them, in order to better understand the women's mentalities.

3: LGBT Americans lecture (notes): Students will look at the experience of LGBT Americans from the 1950s through today. Next, students will watch the documentary Brother Outsider about Bayard Rustin (questions).

4: LGBT Twitter Assignment: Students, with a partner, will explore the evolution of the LGBT rights movement by creating chronological Twitter feeds (assignment).
